Just Promoted? Freaking out? You are no longer alone.
I remember my first month after promotion vividly. Becoming manager to my peers overnight wasn’t easy. Especially given the team restructure happening at the same time (and them not being promoted like you!).
Navigating a role shift,
battling imposter syndrome,
learning to delegate against people-pleasing tendencies,
handling difficult conversations in your first 1:1s,
representing your team in front of senior executives,
becoming accountable for your team performance (no longer just your work),
figuring it all out on the fly…
…is no small feat. It’s like managing a major train station rebuild without stopping traffic.
And the worst part is that you feel like you can’t talk to anyone:
your manager may then think they made a mistake promoting (or hiring) you;
your former peers are no longer your “mates” you can share freely with;
HR are too busy and it’s not really their job unless there is a PIP (wait, what’s a PIP, you may ask? I envy your blissful ignorance);
your family and friends don’t get you. You should celebrate being promoted, not freaking out! Or should you?
You don’t have to figure it out all alone anymore.
What I discovered: leadership is a wonderful self-realisation journey where you can actually empower people in your team, help them grow and make a major positive difference in their lives. The version of leadership I am talking about is servant leadership (or leadership as service - I use those terms interchangeably). You remove obstacles to enable your team to do their best work. And it can be a lot of fun in process, too!
My vision is simple and has two major elements to it:
create a Hands-on training packed with hard-earned concrete leadership insights to provide you with the Oh-so-much-needed coaching and support. It will cover the essentials in those most decisive first months in your new role (and nothing more - you are probably already overwhelmed enough!);
build a Community of first time managers so you can all support each other in a confidential Mastermind-type space, get input, feel accountable for the changes you commit to, share your small wins in a low-pressure environment, root for each other, do reality checks, bounce ideas off, and later, if you wish, become mentors to the new first time managers.
Can you see how this may become a major worldwide incubator of the new generation of servant leaders this world badly needs?
But I am getting ahead of myself. I have plenty of ideas. But for now, I am gathering expressions of interest from first time managers (or people about to be promoted)—maybe this is you?—so I can quickly (like, in 1 month maximum!) design a training program that hits that product-market fit from the first iteration! Just kidding. But seriously, if you need help urgently, I am committed to doing my part.
And then we will set up an ongoing weekly group coaching, 1:1 sessions to discuss those tricky confidential issues you may have, and anything else we will decide is worth doing together.
